ORIC CONFERENCE - 'Revisit-Review-Renew' (back to topic list)
The 2007 ORIC Conference, "Revisit - Review - Renew" is being held at the Novotel Hotel, Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. ORIC invites you to join with colleagues and members of the outdoor community as we meet to discuss current industry issues, gain new skills, network and share ideas. Sport & Recreation Training Package Review (back to topic list)
Service Skills Australia has completed Phase One of the Review of the Sport and Recreation Training Packages - Sport (SRS03), Outdoor Recreation (SRO03), Community Recreation (SRC04) and Fitness (SRF04).

Phase One of the review involved research and analysis of the Training Packages to evaluate their currency and relevance for industry and to address any barriers that inhibit their implementation. It provided the opportunity for industry, training organisations, employers, employees, volunteers and anyone else with an interest in the packages to be involved and provide input into the future skill and knowledge requirements of the sport, fitness and recreation sectors. Skills to Participate Project (back to topic list)
Service Skills Australia is conducting the research project Skill to Participate : Investigating the Effects of Skill Shortages on the NSW Sport & Recreation Industry. The project aims to identify and investigate the areas where skill shortages exist in NSW. A key component of this research will be exploring the vocational education and training interventions and related industry strategies that are currently in use and could potentially be applied to manage and resolve skill shortages within the NSW industry ...more


Outdoor Council of Australia AGM (back to topic list)
The Annual General Meeting of the Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) was held on 29th March 2007. Three new Board members were elected, and long serving members Kathy Kingsford and Dom Hamley retired from the Board and their contributions noted. The OCA Board is now made up of Gordon Duff (Outdoor Recreation Centre, Vic), Ken Pullen (CCI Australia, NSW), Ralph Gurr (Outdoors WA), John Norman (ORIC, NSW), Mike Meredith (Outdoor Educators Association, SA), Tony McKenny (Tas), Michael Coldham (Vic), Paul Fry (CYC, Vic). 2007-08 Women Sports Leadership Grants (back to topic list)
The Australian Government is providing a further $400,000 for women to pursue sports leadership opportunities in 2007-08. More women across Australia will have a greater chance to become leaders in sport, with the support of the 2007-08 Women Sports Leadership Grants announced by the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Issues, the Hon Julie Bishop MP and the Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis ...more

The Minister for Sport & Recreation, Graham West, has just announced the eighty women who have been awarded special scholarships under the 2007 Women's Sports Leaders Scholarship Program. The innovative scholarship program, designed to boost the number of women in leadership and decision making positions in the sport and recreation industry, offers women the opportunity to progress into leadership and decision making roles and further their coaching and officiating qualifications ...more


'Fairness Test' for Workplace Agreements (back to topic list)
On Friday, 4th May, the federal government announced the introduction of a ‘Fairness Test’ for workplace agreements (both collective and individual), explaining that: “The goal of Work Choices was to achieve better outcomes for both employers and employees through greater flexibility in employment arrangements in the workplace.”...more


Army Ration Suspected in Boy's Death (back to topic list)
Army cadets have been banned from eating combat ration packs after the death of a boy at Scotch College in Melbourne. Nathan Francis, 13, was flown to Royal Children's Hospital in a critical condition but died on arrival. He had suffered an allergic reaction to peanuts while on an army cadet camp in late March. A spokeswoman for the Defence Department said the rations had been banned for children but the measure would not carry across the rest of the Defence Force ...more

Two good resources to access information on anaphylaxis.
The Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), is the peak professional body of clinical Allergists and Immunologists in Australia and New Zealand. This peak body has produced the ASCIA Guidelines for the prevention of food anaphylactic reactions in schools, preschools and childcare centres.

The Anaphylaxis Australia website has a host of information and contains a copy of the NSW Health - Anaphylaxis Guidelines for School.

Be Winter Wise:The Apparent Temperature - Wind Chill (back to topic list)
How cold is it really outside? Simply knowing the temperature doesn't tell you enough about the conditions to enable you to prepare sensibly for all winter weather. Air temperature is only one factor in the assesment of thermal stress. Other factors including wind speed, relative humidity and sunshine play important roles in determining how cold you feel outside. NSW Minister for Volunteering, Linda Burney joined volunteers to launch National Volunteer Week.
