close Friday 20 July 2007. Nominate individuals and organisations you believe have made a noteworthy contribution to the outdoor recreation and education industry in NSW.
Nomination Form Category Explanation Award Conditions
Categories - Outstanding Contribution (Individual), Outstanding Contribution (Organisation), Outstanding Achievement in the Community (Organisation) and Environmental Award.
Award Winners will be announced at the Industry Awards Dinner, to be held at the Novotel Hotel, Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, Saturday 25th August, commencing at 6.30pm (during the ORIC Conference).

NPWS Commercial Activity Licensing Review-Discussion Paper (back to topic list)
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have completed and just released a discussion paper outlining a proposal for a new streamlined state wide licensing system. The paper incorporates the comments and views of licensed commercial tour operators and interested stakeholders received during workshops and an online survey conducted in 2006, in which many ORIC members participated. The paper deals with proposals that cover:
- definitions of who should be licensed,
the application and approval process

types of licenses, license conditions and terms and license fee structure

management of high visitation or areas with sensitive cultural and environmental values

encouraging good performance, professionalism and higher operating standard ...more
Outdoor Council of Australia Election of Office Bearers (back to topic list)
The first meeting of the newly elected 2007 OCA Board was held this month with the election of office bearers. President for a 2 year term is Kathy Kingsford (QORF), Vice-President - Gordon Duff (Outdoor Recreation Centre, Vic), Treasurer - Paul Fry (CYC, Vic), Secretary - John Norman (ORIC). A primary focus of the Board's activities was committed to NOLRS and its national application. With an ORIC Board member on the Board of OCA, members may feel reassured of their interests being communicated and represented at the national level.

With funding from the NSW Dept Education and Training, Service Skills Australia is conducting research on Skills to Participate: Investigating the Effects of Skill Shortages
on the NSW Sport & Recreation Industry and is seeking your input through an industry survey.

Males More Likely to Drown (back to topic list)
In the past year, 265 Australians lost their lives in drowning related incidents, according to the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia's 2006 National Drowning Report. This figure is a reduction on the five year average by 9 deaths, but it is 6 more deaths than the previous year. Males are four times more likely to have a drowning-related death than females ...more
