Study While You Work
Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation

The Western Institute of TAFE NSW through Lithgow College is offering a unique and flexible training pathway in partnership with The Outdoor Education Group to allow students to study towards a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation while working in the outdoors or any other profession.

OEG and TAFE NSW are offering a unique opportunity where you can be employed by OEG and study for your Certificate IV through TAFE at the same time. Similar opportunities and support exist for people employed with other organizations or outside the profession.

The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation enables you to work as an unsupervised leader in the outdoor education/recreation profession. The Certificate IV course provides you with the opportunity to challenge yourself physically, emotionally and mentally and gives you the chance to acquire confident leadership skills. You will develop judgement, technical skills and prudent safety practices, as well as the interpersonal skills required to teach and lead others in the outdoors.

The course has been designed to allow students to be employed with OEG (or any other employer of your choice) during the times of the year when the outdoor profession is at its busiest (Feb-April and Oct-Dec) and then study in a concentrated block in the middle of the year (May-Sept). Securing employment while you undertake this program is the responsibility of the individual.

When not in the field undertaking practical units of competency, the course will be primarily taught from the TAFE NSW state-of-the-art portable classroom that will be located in Moss Vale and/or other suitable locations as dictated by the content being delivered.  Skill specializations and electives include:

Adventure Based Learning

Challenge Ropes Courses

Bushwalking and Navigation

Canoeing

Wilderness First Aid

Abseiling

Swift Water Rescue

Rockclimbing

Search and Rescue

Rafting

Mountain Biking

Cross Country Skiing
