Preston Cline Risk Management Workshop (back to topics)
Following on from the National Conference and with thanks to Rob Ridley for sponsorship received from NSW Dept. Sport and Recreation, Preston B. Cline, President of Adventure Incorporated and acknowledged expert on risk management and assessment, presented a full day workshop in Sydney. Approximately 25 ORIC Members took advantage of the opportunity, to engage in a day of information and discussion on operational strategies for interacting with uncertainty in a sustained manner. With industry placing alot of emphasis on risk assessment, this was an ideal opportunity for both Outdoor Leaders and Coordinators to broaden their understanding and approach to risk management and crisis mitigation in the field. Climbing Wall Draft Standards - Extention Granted (back to topics)
Standards Australia have granted an extention until 14 December 2007 for submissions in response to the draft for new standards for artificial climbing structures and challenge courses. It is vitally important that anyone using artificial climbing structures (indoor walls as well as outdoor artificial structures) has the opportunity to provide comment to ensure that the Australian Standard meets industry needs. In the new Training and Assessment Training Package (TAA04)- the training package developed for trainers and assessors, there are a number of units the developers of the package call the 'scaffold units' that tie together or underpin training and assessment. With an estimated 3-5% of children with food allergies, camp providers need to be aware of ingredients that may be allergens and products may contain the ingredients. Anaphylaxis Australia has developed a set of Allergen Information Cards for major allergens:

Bushfire Danger Period-How to know if a Total Fire Ban is Declared (back to topics)
As camp and outdoor providers, it's important to know the rules about using fire during the Bush Fire Danger Period, including fire permits and Total Fire Ban declarations. The Bushfire Danger Period runs from 1 October to 31 March (it can vary in different areas). During this period fire permits are required for open burning, however during a Total Fire Ban no fire may be lit in the open and fire permits are suspended. CSIRO Exploration & Mining scientist Dr Ryan Noble said "When you mix the drinks with soil, acids dissolve some of the metals into solution, which can then easily be detected in routine laboratory analysis." "They are particularly good at discovering elevated levels of metals such as silver, zinc, copper and nickel".
The scientists tested red wine and a number of popular soft drinks. The effectiveness of the technique is unlikely to be affected by whether the wine is a shiraz or a malbec and diet soft drinks are just as effective as those containing sugar more>>
