Study on Disability Participation in Sport and Recreation

UTS School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism researchers Simon Darcy, Aron Murphy, Tracy Taylor and Dan Lock have been successful in an application to the Australian Sports Commission to conduct research on the participation and non-participation of people with disabilities in sport and active recreation.

This research is in addition to the Australian Sports Commission's elite sport development programs for athletes with disabilities and their work with disability specific sporting organisations.

The research is aimed at two groups:

  1. Broad-based participation of people with disabilities to understand the factors that affect the participation, the constraints they face and the benefits they receive from sport and active recreation;

    and

  2. Disability service organisations whose primary focus is not sport and active recreation provision.

The findings will be used to review current approaches to sport and recreation and to improve access provisions.

If you are a person with a disability and would like to be involved in the research click here.
