Successful Risk Management Workshop (back to topics)

Earlier this month Clare Dallat and Deb Ajango, both experts in Risk Management in the outdoors, presented a one-day workshop in Sydney. Deb is the American author of the excellent Lessons Learned books, which provide in-depth analysis of critical incident cases, and proprietor of SafetyEd, an US organization providing outdoor Risk Management training and resource, and Clare has been Director of Risk Management at the Outdoor Education Group (OEG) since 2002.

The day was very successful with the afternoon involving participants in crisis scenarios. A take-home lesson was that appropriate response and functionality increases with training, and all attendees used the day well to increase their knowledge and training in this area. We particularly thank Fiona-Antipodeans, Kira-Outward Bound, Paul-Challenge Ranch, Tim-Anglican Youth, Paul-St Joseph's College, Sharon-3WG Airforce Cadet, Lorraine-TAFE for "playing out" the incident.

A copy of Clare's presentation is available to download State of the Nation.

NZ Outdoor Recreation Investment (back to topics)

Peter Miskimmin, Chief Executive of New Zealand Sport and Recreation Agency (SPARC) has announced an extra $500,000 and a new contestable approach for SPARC's investment in outdoor recreation.

The investment links with the delivery of the outcomes set out in SPARC’s Outdoor Recreation Strategy SPARC 2009-2015 Strategy, and from July this year, there would be a $1.2 million contestable fund available for investing in outdoor recreation.

"A contestable approach will allow a wider range of organisations to put forward proposals," Miskimmin stated, adding "the aim of this investment approach is to achieve increasing, long-lasting participation in outdoor recreation with an initial focus on youth.”

The contestable process is open to any organisation that can demonstrate that they can contribute to the outdoor recreation outcomes sought, however priority will be given to applications that deliver in a collaborative manner, to national and regional organisations, and organisations that do not currently receive community sport investment from SPARC. For-profit organisations can only apply if they are partnering with not-for-profit organisations ... more>>

Parks Eco Pass - 8 months on (back to topics)

In July 2009, NPWS launched the Parks Eco Pass licensing system following extensive consultation with ORIC and it's members, commercial tour operators, industry and community groups, and research into best practice components of other systems around the country. Eight months on, nearly half of all previously licensed operators have moved over to the new system, and around one third of licences issued have been to new operators. The first premium ten year licenses have also been approved. A Parks Eco Pass team is in place and working closely with operators to ensure smooth transitions, applications and activities on park. ORIC continues to talk and liaise with NPWS in the introductory phase of the Eco Pass.

If you're a commercial tour operator, NPWS are asking licensed operators - have you completed or updated your business profile on our website? Don't miss out - tour operator pages are a great way for national parks visitors to find out about you, so make sure your details are there. Contact the Parks Eco Pass team on 02 9585 6082, send an email or visit the NPWS ECO Pass website.

The Role of Human Factors in Led Outdoor Activity Accidents : Project Update (back to topics)

With the aim of exploring the involvement of Human Factors in led outdoor activity incidents and to suggest and to demonstrate the utility of a framework for studying such incidents, this research involved the following tasks:

  1. Literature review. A literature review focussing on led outdoor activity accidents and incidents was undertaken. The aim was to ascertain what is currently known about such accidents and incidents, to distil the Human Factors issues which have already been implicated, to identify gaps in current knowledge, and to suggest a more comprehensive and relevant framework to aid the understanding of incident causation in the led outdoor activity sector.
  2. Exploratory case study analyses. To demonstrate the potential utility of applying theoretically underpinned, systems-based accident analysis methodologies within the led outdoor activity domain, three led outdoor activity accidents were analysed using two systems-based accident analysis methods. The findings from these analyses were then compared to those derived from an analysis, which used a framework developed in the led outdoor activity domain.
  3. Workshop. A workshop involving project stakeholders, led outdoor activity personnel, and researchers from MUARC was held in order to disseminate the research findings and to determine the most appropriate way forward for the subsequent phases of this research.

Bush Regeneration Training Program Launch-Accredited Volunteer Activity for Duke of Ed & Scout Awards (back to topics)

A bush regeneration training program for young people launched this month with the dual aim of keeping the local bushland healthy and providing an opportunity for young people to scope out an environmental career.

The Engagement & Retention of Youth in Bush Regeneration Program initiative provided students who were interested in becoming an environmental professional with skills, knowledge and a better understanding of what working in the bush entails. "The training program has been developed specifically for the age group and is based on the core duties a NPWS field officer or ranger undertakes every day," NPWS Ranger Mel Tyas said.

"It is an accredited volunteer activity for the Duke of Edinburgh and Scouts Awards and will provide young people who are interested in an environmental career with an inside look at what it's all about." ... more>>

Reimbursement and Value of Volunteer Effort Research Report (back to topics)

The latest research report from The Centre for Volunteering's Research and Policy team examines reimbursement of volunteers for their out-of-pocket expenses as well as assessing the value of a volunteers' effort in the not-for-profit sector of NSW. Volunteer effort is represented in monetary terms as hours of work comparative to an equivalent paid employee role in a similar style of organisation. Reimbursement of volunteers' expenses is a subject that has drawn a lot of interest and input from the Not-for-Profit sector via several surveys existing in the field. Tax implications are relevant for both the volunteer and organisations utilising volunteers ... more>>

Unfair Dismissal - Where do you stand? (back to topics)

For any small business owner or operator who is bound by the new Fair Work Act, it is essential to understand what does, and does not, count as an unfair dismissal. An unfair dismissal will occur when an employee has been dismissed - that is, fired - and the dismissal is 'harsh, unjust or unreasonable', and the dismissal was not a genuine redundancy. If the employee is dismissed from a 'small business', the dismissal will also be unfair if it was inconsistent with the 'Small Business Fair Dismissal Code'.

The question is whether your business fits the legal definition of a 'small business,' for the purposes of unfair dismissal, and to answer this question, use the Small Business Calculator Guide, a tool built as part of the Fair Work for Small Business project, and follow the simple step by step process.
