Standards for eggs and egg products (back to topics)

Food Standards Australia New Zealand is well down the track with its Primary Production and Processing (PPP) Standard for Eggs and Egg Products, the latest of a series of PPP standards being developed to include in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

PPP standards are mandatory national regulations, enforced by all States and Territories.

Having analysed the possible risks of egg contamination across the whole egg production chain, including on-farm, processing, handling and retail storage right through to human consumption, the FSANZ are in the process of developing control measures to minimise those risks, and will also discuss these control measures with the Standard Development Committee more>>


Service Industries Environmental Scan 2009 (back to topics)

The Service Industries Environmenal Scan 2009 will draw together intelligence and research about existing and emerging trends and tendencies in the service industry sectors covered by Service Skills Australia. As part of the project, an on-line survey regarding workforce development and planning will be conducted in July 2008. The survey will ask targeted questions around the underpinning concerns and issues regarding workforce planning capabilities and practice. Changes to who needs a Workers Compensation Policy (back to topics)

It is intended that from 30 June 2008 employers with annual wages $7,500 or under will no longer be required to hold workers compensation insurance, except where an employer engages an apprentice or is a member of a Group for premium purposes. A worker of an employer that is not required to hold a policy will still be covered for workers compensation and employers will still have the same obligation as they do now with regard to workplace safety and providing assistance with injury management and return to work more>>

 
Helping volunteers pay their petrol bills (back to topics)

In a move that significantly expands the Volunteer Grants Program, an additional $15million over 3 years has been committed to help community organisations and their volunteers with their work, including help to pay their fuel bills.

The Government will expand items eligible for funding under the program to include petrol vouchers for volunteers who use their vehicle for volunteering purposes more>>


Food industry emergency pantry list (back to topics)

Australia’s Food Industry Working Group has launched a national plan to ensure people can find food and essential supplies in the event of an emergency or public health issue.

Part of the plan includes essential advice on how to keep food fresh and safe when power and other essential services are not available.

In co-operation with the Australian Government and the state and territory governments, supermarket retailers and the food sector, the group has published a Pantry List – literally a list of essential items necessary for coping with an emergency – together with advice on how to prepare and deal with an emergency and be self-sufficient for long periods of confinement more>>


Taking the lead on literacy and numeracy (back to topics)

Service Skills Australia (SSA) has developed '4 Steps to Taking The Lead' a professional development program that works through the useful tips, information and links relating to literacy and numeracy.

The program also reflects the structure of the elective unit within TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, titled TAALLN401B Address language, literacy and numeracy issues within leaning and assessment practice. So participating trainers and assessors will build skills in identifying and addressing language, literacy and numeracy issues, and at the same time can collect evidence for the unit if they choose more>>


"Volunteering in Australia" (back to topics)

To coincide with National Volunteer Week, a new publication on Australia's volunteers has been launched.

Volunteering in Australia - changing patterns of voluntary work, 1995 - 2006, provides a snapshot of volunteering - the people who are most likely to take on a volunteering role and how they support the communities.

Around Australia more than five million Australians volunteer their time to support communities, and the types of organisation that volunteersgave most time to were sport/physical recreation (26% of all voluntary work hours), community/welfare (19%), religious (17%) and education & training (10%) organisations.


New-look DECC (NPWS) website (back to topics)

The Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC), within which the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) sits, are updating their Parks website. From mid-May information about parks and reserves under the "Visiting a Park" section will include more maps and more details on walks etc, including accommodation and links to other nature based attractions.
