The issue of a “National Agenda” or a “National
Trails Alliance” has been part of the discussion at previous Tracks and Trails
Conferences and is still the subject of discussion as we move towards the 2008
Tracks and Trails Conference. In an
attempt to progress the discussion to some fruitful outcomes, the 2008
Conference Convenors are proposing three separate but linked processes: 1. An on-line Discussion Forum to
stimulate thought and discussion prior to March 2008 and to attempt to clarify
what role a National Trails Alliance might fulfil, how it might be established
and how it might function. Previous
discussion points as well as all options and ideas presented through the on-line
discussion, in addition to identified advantages/disadvantages will be collated
to form the basis of a Discussion Paper.
The Discussion Paper will propose some options /recommendations for
consideration by interested stakeholders.

2. A pre Conference meeting to
discuss a National Trails Alliance will be held on
3. During the Conference, any issues raised which would best be addressed via a co-ordinated national approach will be documented.
As a result of all three strategies listed above, it is hoped that the way forward will be clearer by the end of the Conference and possibly lead to a Statement of Intent or Memorandum of Understanding, with in-principle support from Government and non-Government stakeholders alike, by the conclusion of the Conference.
