James, Justin and their kayak, Lot 41, left Forster, NSW, on November 13 2007.
62 days and 3,318 km later they arrived in New Plymouth New Zealand.
The pair braved ten-metre swells, faced howling winds of more than 50 knots, endured severe food and sleep deprivation, wasting muscles and adverse winds and currents to become the first kayak expedition across the Tasman sea, as well as become the longest trans-oceanic kayaking expedition undertaken by two expeditioners.

James and Justin will share their secrets of survival, of taking control of life, challenging yourself mentally and physically, facing adversity and the strategic planning and contingency of such a mammoth task.

Outdoor Recreation Training Package Review Workshop (back to topics)
Service Skills Australia (SSA) is conducting a forum in Homebush on 22 July 2008, for industry representatives from the outdoor recreation industry to provide input into future skills requirements of your workforce. SSA is reviewing the outdoor recreation qualifications and competency standards that support the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system in NSW, which will determine the standard of future skills and knowledge required for your workforce. The review will impact on services and outcomes provided by the VET system in NSW including training courses delivered through TAFE and private training organisations. The workshop will cover
- skills development and workforce participatin in the outdoor recreation industry
- training that reflects industry's expectation and standards
- quality outcomes from training providers
- impact of this review on licensing, registration and/or accreditation requirements more>>
Tourism + National Parks Taskforce (back to topics)
Headed by Mr Brian Gilligan, former head of NPWS, a Ministerial Taskforce on Tourism and National Parks in NSW has been established to examine and report on opportunities for an enhanced level of sustainable tourism in NSW's parks and reserves that is compatible with the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage values of those areas, by the Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, the Hon Verity Firth MP and the Minister for Tourism, the Hon Matt Brown MP.
