The Outdoor Recreation Industry Council, NSW inc, provides organisational accreditation, industry direction and is the voice to those who provide Outdoor Recreation activities in NSW.
In view of the recent rescues involving canoeists and bushwalkers in the Blue Mountains and the Hawkesbury it may be timely to remind providers of the application of risk management prior to and during adventure activities.
ORIC plays a role in providing activity leaders formal recognition of their skills, on a national level, and direction in seeking training to gain those skills if they are not current. The industry throughout Australia has an expectation of the minimum level of skills a guide or leader should have before venturing into the field. Apart from the activity specific skills required for the activities such as Guide Bushwalks in tracked or easy untracked areas or Guide canoe trips on flat and undemanding water, there are generic competencies that include interpret the weather in the field, facilitate a group, provide first aid, deal with conflict, analyse risk in an outdoor activity.
There are also Adventure Activity Standards currently under development in NSW and being used in most other states and territories within Australia that are a guide to considerations and skill sets for a variety of outdoor activities.
Outdoor leaders, guides and instructors have a duty of care that is shadowed by the catastrophic outcomes that may result from poor preparation and lack of recognisable skills - irrespective of the good intentions of the provider.
