Australian Sports Commission's
Disability Education Program

NSW Sport and Recreation are currently running Disability Education Program for managers and physical activity providers, teachers, teacher's aide, coaches and sports administrators, to better include people with a disability.

Run through the NSW Department Sport & Recreation, the Australian Sports Commission's Disability Education Program aims to assist sport and physical activity providers to better include people with a disability in sport and physical activity.

The three hour workshops are conducted by highly motived and experienced presenters at a fee of $33 (incl GST). The course explores strategies to minimise disadvantage to people with a disability and methods to adapt and modify activities to provide maximum participation for all individuals in sport and recreation.

Workshop details:

  • Date: Wednesday 15th August 2007 (bookings close 7th August 2007)
  • Venue: NSW Sport & Recreation, 6B Figtree Drive, Sydney Olympic Park
  • Time: 9.00am - 12.30pm
  • Cost: $33.00 (student/pension discount available)
  • This is a practical workshop and requires participants to wear clothing suitable for practical activity.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Consider how the sport and physical activity setting can disadvantage people with a disability
  • Develop strategies to minimise disadvantage
  • Understand the concept of inclusion
  • Adapt and modity activities to provide maximum participation for all individuals.

Resources
Give It a Go, Opening Doors and Activity Cards are the official resources of the Australian Sports Commission's Disability Education Program (DEP).

Give It a Go
The core resource of the DEP, this 200-page full colour book examines:

  • issues of inclusion
  • the principles of adapting and modifying for individual difference
  • practical ideas on adapting
  • strageties that sport clubs and organisaiton can use to attract people with disabilities as members
  • the implications of sport and physicial activity for individuals with various physical, intellectual, sensory and health conditions.

Opening Doors
Provides sport and recreation organisations with practical information and ideas on including peoole with a disability in sport and recreation. A series of case studies explores the strategies employed by generic service providers to attract and retain people with disabilities as members.
