Sue Roffey 'Circle Time' Workshop'
Invitation to Attend
Circle Time offers great potential for Teachers, Duke of Edinburgh Coordinators, PDHPE and Outdoor Recreation staff. It is a framework for social and emotional learning which uses shared activities and games to promote the understanding and skills that are the foundations for positive relationships, resilience and responsibility.
Circle Time is a way of promoting Emotional Literacy, and although mostly used in classrooms, the framework can be applied in the "outdoors" classroom setting with groups at all ages. It is a democratic and creative approach used to consider a wide range of issues, addressing values, attitudes and skills within a structured, safe and supportive framework. Evaluation of Circle Time indicates that it can have a significant impact on: |
| Promoting positive behaviour |
Sharing and taking responsibility |
| Preventing and addressing bullying |
Fostering belonging |
| Clarifying rules and expectations |
Supporting inclusion |
| Defining values tion |
Conflict resolution / management |
| Developing good communication |
Developing emotional & social understanding and skills |
| Developing a supportive class /school ethos |
Creating and developing trust |
| The processes of Circle Time are intended to: |
| Promote the value of both individuals & the group |
Emphasise equal value of all contributions |
| Not allow individuals to put each other down |
Focus on problem solving issues not blaming individuals |
| Promote inclusion |
Not insist on participation but give second chances |
| Focus on the positive rather than the negative |
Allow for mistakes |
| Emphasise solutions |
Give time for reflection |
| Give everyone a turn to contribute |
|
| Relationship development is central - Activities promote: |
| Sharing of experiences |
Collaboration and co-operation |
| Breaking down prejudice |
Practising communication skills, especially listening |
| Promoting understanding of each other |
Developing understanding of abstract ideas such as
kindness, tolerance, support |
| Empathy building |
Having fun together |
| Giving a language and a space for feelings |
|
