DUTY OF CARE : Law of Negligence -
A requirement to act reasonably
The law of negligence affects the way providers who deliver services to various parts of the community.
It sets minimum standards in the way that they deliver these services. This concept is known as duty of care.
The burden imposed on the providers of outdoor recreation and education services by the law of negligence is the requirement to act reasonably. If they do not act reasonably and people are injured, they will be held accountable. |

CARE AND AFTER-SALES SERVICING OF EQUIPMENT
A throw-away approach to equipment is the antithesis of many of the important values associated with outdoor education - things like the management of scarce resources, self-reliance and a sustainable approach to consumption.
Recognising the basics of a sound product and then understanding the threats to its long-term survival and what to do about them comprise the basic knowledge of equipment care and maintenance. The result will be a dramatic reduction in the rate of demand for the non-renewable resources that remain essential materials from which modern backpacking gear is made. This affect will far outweigh the benefits of simply incorporating some recycled components.
This session will identify the main agents causing deterioration and how to minimise their effects. A number of simple DIY repair tricks will be presented and with some basic tools and materials these could be incorporated into many outdoor ed programs. |

RISK MANAGEMENT - why are we afraid of it?
RISK MANAGEMENT DEMYSTIFIED?
Increasingly, outdoor activity providers devoted to the care & quality of experience of participants, speak of the need to ensure the health and safety of students and the opportunity for participants to enjoy and achieve. This desire to defend participants against some very real dangers can easily lead us into a sanitised world in which these very ideals are stifled and the role of experience, creativity and challenge do not exist. Activities that previous generations enjoyed as part of a ‘normal’ youth development have been labelled as ‘dangerous’ and the adults or institutions who allow them ‘irresponsible’.
This presentation begins by identifying some key components of a vital citizenship. It identifies some recent examples of shrinking youth development horizons. It argues that our growing ‘risk aversion’ is undermining the growth of participants - it is limiting the freedom to have adventures, to learn by experience and to simply play. And in doing so it threatens the very things that it quite rightly serves to protect. In particular this presentation will explore the role of operators in this trend and expose some of the contradictions that our current thinking and policies maintain. |

THE REAL RISKS OF KAYAKING
When asked to talk about the risks involved in kayaking, inland paddlers will picture paddlers trapped in strainers, sea kayakers will picture great white sharks and howling winds.
The real picture of what has changed people's lives is quite different and poorly understood. From an analysis of 9 years of incident reports and two studies I set about separating fears and fiction from the real statistical facts.
Being a good leader is still about preparation and decisive action. What to prepare and how to prepare for action is the key. |

GO! Girls Outdoors
This presentation will look at some of the reasons why there are less women than men participating in outdoor adventure activities and pursuing careers in the outdoor industry, and consider what is required to ensure that women have equal opportunities in an outdoor environment.
It will discuss the differences in how men and women approach outdoor adventure activities, confront risk, handle stress, interact with one another and acquire technical skills, and will look at examples of how knowledge of the key differences between men and women can make the difference between mediocre and exemplary expedition facilitation or centre management – so this is not just a presentation for women!
A series of profiles of organisations, outdoor professionals, athletes, professional adventurers and resources, will be used to illustrate the points made, also opportunity to explore the GO! Girls Outdoors website to see the how it can be used as a resource for outdoor educators, teachers, small businesses and large organisations. |
