The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers : Teaching Strategies and Tools to Help Prepare Our Outdoor Education Students in this Uncertain World.
- Outdoor Education providers have a wonderful opportunity to program activities that address the current needs of generation Y.
- Recent statistics would tell us that many of our young people are in crisis.
- There is an ever increasing body of evidence from many disciplines that suggests that today’s young people are less resilient. (Noble, 2007)
- As a result many of our youth are struggling: Episodes of depression, suicide, self-harm, violence and problematic substance abuse are increasing.
- 15-20% of high school students have had depression while at school. (Relivich & Seligman 2003).
- In the past 30 years, the suicide rate for males aged between 15 and 24 years has tripled.
- Over the last 10 years, youth suicide has increased by 35%.
- With this trend in our young people outdoor education can take a lead role in the fight against these modern mental health issues.
- Recent developments in the field of Positive psychology, and teenage resilience training suggest new avenues of programming for outdoor educators. McGrath & Noble (2003). (Seligman, 2000); Pryer, Carpenter, Townsend, 2005.
- Scots College Glengarry has implemented the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenager program into their academic and outdoor program to help give their students knowledge and skills to build up their resilience to face the challenges of today’s world.
- The programming and implementation of such a course takes extra work, and training in specific facilitation skills.
- The outcomes however are worth it, they are an investment in our young people.
This kind of programming can be considered in the realms of health promotion and may offer providers and schools a marketing advantage over competitors.
